Claude Cohen-Tannoudji discusses new mechanisms for generating light, and the discovery of new light sources with remarkable properties. He reviews important applications that have emerged from these discoveries, including atomic clocks, matter waves and atom lasers.

Southeast University, colloquially referred to as Dong Nan, is one of the top 10 universities in scientific research and development in China, and one of only 32 universities administered directly under the Ministry of Education of China. Founded in 1902, it has over 16,000 undergraduate and 10,000 postgraduate students enrolled in over 30 schools and departments.

Nanjing, the capital of China’s Jiangsu Province, is a major industrial and communications centre with an urban population of over five million. Rich in history, it served seven times as the capital of regional empires, twice as the seat of revolutionary governments, and twice as the capital of a united China.
